Environmental Excellence in Action

EK Recycling Ltd is dedicated to protecting and preserving the natural environment. We believe that responsible waste management is not just a regulatory obligation—it is a fundamental responsibility to future generations.

Protection First

We design every operation to minimise environmental impact. Advanced containment systems and continuous monitoring safeguard soil, water, and air quality.

Resource Recovery

We extract maximum value from waste streams through advanced sorting and processing, diverting materials from landfill back into the circular economy.

Community Stewardship

We work transparently with communities, councils, and businesses. Our commitment to environmental stewardship extends to supporting local conservation initiatives.

Guiding Environmental Principles

These five principles form the foundation of our environmental management system and operational strategy.

Prevention of Pollution

We proactively prevent environmental contamination through modern equipment, secondary containment systems, and rigorous operational controls at all our facilities.

Waste Hierarchy Compliance

We strictly follow the waste hierarchy: reduce at source, reuse wherever possible, recycle materials efficiently, and recover energy responsibly from residual waste.

Continuous Improvement

Environmental performance is reviewed quarterly. We invest in new technologies and innovative processes to reduce our own footprint and improve recovery rates.

Regulatory Excellence

We exceed all environmental regulations and hold all necessary Environment Agency permits, waste carrier licences, and environmental certifications.

Transparent Communication

We maintain open communication with stakeholders through environmental reporting, site monitoring data sharing, and community consultation on all major operations.

Biodiversity Protection

We actively protect and enhance local biodiversity. Our sites include habitat creation areas and we support ongoing conservation efforts in the surrounding region.

Environmental Management System

EK Recycling Ltd operates a comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS) that aligns with best practice standards. Our EMS covers all operational aspects, from waste intake and processing to final disposal and monitoring. We have implemented ISO 14001 principles across our facilities to ensure consistent environmental performance and continuous improvement.

Our management team conducts quarterly environmental audits, with monthly monitoring of key performance indicators. Any non-conformities are tracked and rectified promptly, with root cause analysis undertaken to prevent recurrence.

Pollution Prevention & Control

Preventing environmental pollution is central to our operations. All waste processing activities are designed to minimise air, water, and soil contamination risks.

Air Quality Management

Our facilities are equipped with advanced dust suppression systems, enclosed processing areas, and biofilters where appropriate. We monitor ambient air quality through our own monitoring network and work with environmental agencies to ensure compliance with air quality standards. All mobile plant equipment undergoes regular maintenance to reduce emissions.

Water Management

Groundwater protection is a priority. Our sites feature:

  • Secondary containment systems for all storage tanks and processing areas
  • Sealed floors in waste processing areas to prevent leachate generation
  • Rainwater collection and treatment systems
  • Regular groundwater monitoring through licensed boreholes
  • Compliance with all water abstraction and discharge permits

Soil & Ground Protection

All waste materials are handled on impermeable, purpose-designed surfaces. We maintain detailed records of all soil testing and remediation activities. Where our operations may have legacy environmental liabilities, we work proactively with the Environment Agency to assess and manage risks.

Biodiversity & Habitat Management

We recognise that our sites occupy land in rural and semi-rural areas. We are committed to protecting and enhancing local biodiversity through several initiatives:

  • Habitat creation programs on operational land including native tree planting and wildflower meadows
  • Protection of existing hedgerows and woodland features
  • Support for local wildlife conservation through partnership with environmental NGOs
  • Nesting site provision for protected bird species during operational planning
  • Annual ecological surveys to monitor biodiversity gains

Water Resource Management

Water is a precious resource. Our facilities implement water conservation measures including:

  • Recycled water systems for dust suppression and wheel wash facilities
  • Rainwater harvesting and storage for non-potable uses
  • Minimisation of potable water usage through efficient practices
  • Regular leakage inspections and repair protocols
  • Efficient irrigation systems where landscaping is undertaken

Air Quality & Odour Control

Our waste processing operations are designed to minimise odours and protect air quality. Key measures include:

  • Enclosed and ventilated processing areas with biofilter or activated carbon treatment
  • Rapid waste processing to minimise exposure time
  • Dust suppression through water spraying and surfacing management
  • Regular emissions monitoring at facility boundaries
  • Rapid response procedures for any off-site odour complaints

Noise Management

We operate with sensitivity to our neighbours and maintain strict noise controls:

  • Operational hours managed to minimise early morning and evening disturbance
  • Equipment maintenance programs to reduce mechanical noise
  • Strategic use of barriers and enclosures around high-noise operations
  • Regular noise monitoring in accordance with Environmental Permitting Regulations
  • Community liaison to address any noise concerns promptly

Restoration & Aftercare Planning

Where our operations involve land use, we plan for long-term aftercare and restoration. Our approach includes:

  • Comprehensive restoration plans for all landfill operations with progressive habitat creation
  • Long-term monitoring protocols extending beyond operational closure
  • Phased restoration to create wildlife habitats and recreational spaces
  • Community engagement in restoration design and ongoing aftercare
  • Financial provisioning for all restoration and aftercare obligations

Monitoring & Compliance

Environmental monitoring is integrated into our operational management. We conduct:

  • Monthly monitoring: Air, water, and operational performance indicators
  • Quarterly audits: Comprehensive environmental compliance reviews
  • Annual surveys: Ecological assessments and environmental impact evaluation
  • External verification: Independent environmental audits and regulator inspections
  • Data management: All monitoring data is recorded and retained in accordance with regulatory requirements

Monitoring results are published in our annual environmental report, available to the public and regulatory agencies. Any monitoring data exceeding agreed thresholds triggers investigation and corrective action.

Certifications & Accreditations

EK Recycling Ltd maintains the following environmental certifications and accreditations:

  • ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification
  • Environment Agency Waste Management Licence
  • Environmental Permitting Compliance for all operational sites
  • Waste Licence No. CBDU619918 for resource recovery operations
  • Membership of industry environmental working groups and best practice forums

Staff Training & Competence

All staff involved in environmental management receive regular training on:

  • Environmental policy and procedures
  • Pollution prevention techniques
  • Waste handling and segregation protocols
  • Emergency response procedures for environmental incidents
  • Environmental law and regulatory compliance

Review & Continuous Improvement

This environmental policy is reviewed annually by the Board and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, operational improvements, or technological advances. We welcome feedback from stakeholders and are committed to ongoing environmental improvement.
